Sergeant Kusick was a member of the Command and Control Detachment, 5th Special Forces Group. On November 9, 1967, he was being extracted in a Sikorsky Sea King Search and Rescue Helicopter (HH-3H) in Laos, when the aircraft crashed and burned. Later Sergeant Kusick remains were identified, but were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
