Captain Johnston was a member of the 497th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Ubon Airfield, Thailand. On January 4, 1973, he was the weapons systems officer of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4D) on an operational mission over Laos, when his aircraft was struck by hostile fire. He ejected and parachuted to the jungle, where he was killed by the fall. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
