Benjamin Jenkins was born in Valley Falls, Kansas on June 14, 1876. After working as a clerk and teaching in Kansas, he worked as an assistant to the Union Pacific agent in Onaga, Kansas. In September 1899, he quit the railroad business and became a journalist. He moved to the Isthmus of Panama on July 16 1905, where he worked as in several clerical positions. He married Sadie E. Bomar from Clay Center, Kansas on August 14, 1907. He rose to Assistant Chief Clerk of the Atlantic Division. He died on January 30, 1929 and was buried at the Corozal American Cemetery.
