Lieutenant Colonel Hicks was a member of the 14th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron. On August 15, 1968, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Phantom II Reconnaissance Fighter (RF-4C) on a reconnaissance mission 5 miles east of Ron, Quang Binh Province, North Vietnam, where his aircraft was shot down by hostile fire. He ejected safely to the ground, but contact was lost. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
