Captain Cogdell was a member of the 606th Air Commando Squadron, Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai Airfield, Thailand. On January 17, 1967, he was the pilot of a North American Trojan Trainer (T-28D) on a mission over Laos, when his aircraft was shot down by hostile fire. His remains were recovered on February 8, 1994 and identified on May 11, 1994. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
