Specialist, Fifth Class Chavira was a member of Troop B, 2nd Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. On May 28, 1971, he was the observer in a Hughes Cayuse Observation Helicopter on a visual reconnaissance mission in the northern A Shau Valley in Thua Thin Province, South Vietnam when a rocket propelled grenade struck the aircraft causing it to explode and crash. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
