Lieutenant Colonel Cappelli was a member of the 354th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On November 17, 1967, he was the pilot of a Thunderchief Fighter (F-105D) on a mission southwest of Hanoi in Hoi Binh Province, North Vietnam, when his aircraft was hit by hostile fire. He bailed out successfully but contact with him was lost. His remains were recovered on December 15, 1988 and identified on May 4, 1989. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
