William Henry Bolen was born in Buffalo, New York on October 5, 1871. As a young man, William left his farm and was employed as a deckhand aboard the ore carrying ship "ANNIE VAUGHT" on the Great Lakes. On December 28, 1893, his ship sank in Lake Michigan. He moved to Buffalo and worked for the Buffalo Street Railway Company. In 1901 he went to Equator and was employed as Chief Engineer of the Quayaquil & Quito Railroad. He then worked for the U.S. Navy on rewiring the battleship "USS CONNECTICUT" in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. In early 1907, he moved to Panama to work as an electrician for the Isthmian Canal Commission. On April 14, 1911, he was awarded the Roosevelt Medal for his work on the Panama Canal. Later he received two service bars. Upon retirement, he remained in Panama. He died on May 21, 1937. He was cremated and buried at the Corozal American Cemetery.
