Notes
Andrew Atchison was born in Monroe, Muskingum County, Ohio on May 14, 1855. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Kansas and spent most of his earlier adulthood teaching under privileged slaves in Dunlap, Kansas and American Indians in Oklahoma and New Mexico. He married Florence Ester Robinson in 1886. Because of his checkered career at teaching, he applied for a position with the International Correspondence Schools (ICS) and was accepted. He did so well that he was offered the position of General Manager in Panama. He taught Bible class to poor West Indies children and founded the first Chinese school, the Yook Chey School in Panama. After retirement he remained in Panama. He died of influenza on October 28, 1933 and was buried at the Corozal American Cemetery.
