Colonel Appleby was a member of the 555th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Ubon Air Base, Thailand. On October 7, 1967, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4D) photo reconnaissance escort mission over North Vietnam. When the aircraft was over Hoi Binh, Hoi Bing Province, it received heavy damage from hostile fire and crashed. His remains were recovered on February 13, 1995 and identified on October 2, 1995. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
